The Poll Reps. Lawler, Garbarino & Nick LaLota Don’t Want Anyone to See: 40% Say Big Ugly Bill “Hurt” Them, Their Families

Washington D.C. – A new national YouGov/CBS poll found a staggering 40 percent of voters say the Trump-GOP Big Ugly Bill passed last year has “hurt” them or their family, while 21 percent say they’ve seen no benefit at all. The survey comes as NBC News reports that insurance costs are poised to spike again next year for most Americans after Trump and Republicans like Mike Lawler (R-NY-17), Andrew Garbarino (R-NY-2), Nick LaLota (R-NY-1) robbed $1 trillion from Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act (ACA) to pay for tax breaks for billionaires and big corporations.

Brad Woodhouse, President of Save My Care: “So many families are worse off than they were before Trump-GOP Big Ugly Bill dug its claws into the economy. Since Republicans ripped away tax credits from working families, millions have seen their monthly premiums jump by hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars – and millions have been forced to drop coverage altogether. Gas, food and housing are all more expensive than the year before, and we already know health premiums will be even worse next year. Trump and his accomplices in Congress like Reps. Lawler, Garbarino, LaLota hatched a raw deal: a full-blown affordability crisis for working people in exchange for more tax breaks for billionaires and big corporations.  It’s no mystery why so many voters see the Big Ugly law as a punch in the gut, and why Reps. Lawler, Garbarino, LaLota desperately want families to forget who brought the pain.”

KEY REASONS WHY 40% OF VOTERS SAY THE BIG UGLY LAW “HURT” THEM AND THEIR FAMILIES:

Nick LaLota claimed that the bill he voted for “provides direct financial relief to Long Island families. Andrew Garbarino claimed that the bill he voted for did “not cut Medicaid benefits” for many New Yorkers. Mike Lawler claimed that the bill he voted for was “not a major cut”.  But the reality is:

  • An estimated 588,082 New Yorkers have already lost their Medicaid, CHIP, or ACA coverage after Republicans gutted health care:
    • 534,608 New Yorkers have been kicked off of Medicaid and CHIP.
    • 53,474 New Yorkers dropped their health care coverage after premiums skyrocketed.
  • More than 63,000 Long Islanders lost access to New York’s Essential Plan on July 1 after the federal government cut funding for the low-cost public health plan. Mike Lawler says he opposes cuts for “eligible” Medicaid recipients, but in his district alone over 14,000 residents lost access to New York’s Essential Plan.
  • 860,000 New Yorkers in total are anticipated to become uninsured between 2025 and 2034.
  • Thousands of New Yorkers living in these districts were receiving tax credits to make their health care more affordable. Now premiums for New Yorkers receiving ACA tax credits increased by an average of 149% this year:

  • A 45-year-old in New York making $64,000 saw their average annual premium costs rise by $4,508 to hit $9,948 this year.
  • A 60-year-old couple in New York making $85,000 saw their average annual premium costs rise by $12,671 to hit $19,896 this year.
  • A family of four in New York making $130,000 saw their average annual premium costs rise by $17,132 to hit $28,352 this year.

NEW YORK HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS AT RISK

  • Now, thanks to Republicans gutting the premium tax credits and hiking New Yorkers’ premiums, providers in New York will lose an additional $213 million in funding and face a 1.3% spike in uncompensated care demand.
  • New York hospitals alone are expected to lose $40.9 billion over the next decade. Nick LaLota’s district is home to eight hospitals that each receive more than 45 percent of their revenue from Medicaid and Medicare, according to the Health Care Association of New York State, and three Long Island health care facilities are at-risk or closed:
    • AT-RISK: Northwell Health
    • AT-RISK: Nassau University Medical Center
    • CLOSED: Nassau University Medical Center — Labor & Delivery
  • Two hospitals in Mike Lawler’s district are at-risk:
    • AT-RISK: Montefiore Nyack Hospital
    • AT-RISK: Good Samaritan Hospital
