Washington D.C. – July 4th will mark the one-year anniversary the Trump-GOP ‘Big Ugly’ Bill was signed into law. But don’t expect a celebration or even acknowledgement of the milestone from Republicans in Congress like Senator Dan Sullivan (R-AK) and U.S. Rep. Nick Begich (R-AK-AL) who forced it on an unconsenting American public.
A year later, there is nothing to show for Republicans making the largest cuts to health care in U.S. history to fund tax breaks for billionaires and big corporations – only the worst inflation in three years and pain and misery for working people and seniors:
- Eight million Americans have so far lost the coverage they relied on to stay alive and healthy, while 15 million people in total are set to lose health care in the years to come.
- Health insurance premiums have more than doubled for over 22 million Americans.
- One in three Americans are now cutting back on essentials to afford health care.
- Over 1,000 hospitals, nursing homes, maternity wards, and other critical providers are closing, cutting essential services families rely on, or are at risk of cuts or closure.
“One year ago, Republicans like Senator Sullivan and Rep. Begich made a corrupt choice to rip away affordable health care from millions of Americans to blanket billionaires and big corporations with more tax breaks they didn’t need,” said Brad Woodhouse, President of Save My Care. “Donald Trump and his accomplices in Congress decided that skyrocketing health care costs and difficulty seeing a doctor matters less than a tax handout for someone like Elon Musk worth a trillion dollars. The richest 1% are the only ones celebrating a year later. Senator Sullivan and Rep. Begich may run from their decision that manufactured a health care affordability crisis, but there’s no hiding the ‘Big Ugly’ choices their constituents are now making, like skipping meals, splitting pills, putting off emergency care, or racking up debt.”
