For the past year and a half, President Trump and Republicans in Congress have waged a deliberate, aggressive campaign to undermine health care and now hardworking families are being asked to pay the price.
Last week, insurance companies’ started requesting their initial premium rate hikes for next year across the country. In some of the states that were made public already, insurance companies want to raise rates as high as 64 percent, or even 91 percent. We will continue to see more of these huge rate hikes as more states make the insurance companies’ rates public over the next weeks and months.
In both states, the insurance companies publicly stated that Trump administration policies or Republican actions in Congress were responsible for premium increases.
Virginian-Pilot: “Cigna and CareFirst said Trump administration policies, including the repeal of the individual mandate, led to their proposed increases.”
Baltimore Sun: “‘These proposed rates reflect the expected costs of providing coverage for these members, including the impact of eliminating the individual mandate penalty.”
More states’ rates will be in announced in the coming weeks. Republicans in Congress need to speak up against the Trump Administration’s sabotage efforts, stop their repeal efforts in Congress, and work on bipartisan solutions to make coverage more affordable, instead of helping the insurance industry make huge profits on the backs of hardworking families.
